In February, we welcomed two leading neurosurgeons from Italy whose work in skull base and endoscopic procedures continues to shape modern minimally invasive neurosurgery.

How is an instrument developed that is used every day in demanding neurosurgical procedures? The answer lies not only in development and manufacturing, but also in the continuous exchange between clinical users and manufacturers.
As part of a visit to Sutter, the Italian neurosurgeons Cesare Zoia, MD, and Andrea Montalbetti, MD, met the teams behind the instruments they use in their clinical practice. The discussions highlighted how clinical experience and precision engineering work hand in hand to address the requirements of modern endoscopic neurosurgery.
Alex Honodoska, Sales Manager EMEA at Sutter, welcomed Cesare Zoia, MD, and Andrea Montalbetti, MD, from Moriggia Pelascini Hospital in Gravedona, Italy.
Both neurosurgeons are particularly renowned for their expertise in skull base surgery and endoscopic procedures. Their clinical focus includes minimally invasive approaches that place high demands on instrument handling, visualization, and ergonomics.
The visit provided an opportunity to exchange experiences from the operating room with the teams involved in the development and manufacturing of the instruments used in these procedures.

Clinical Requirements Meet Precision Engineering
One focus of the visit was the exchange with Sutter’s precision engineering team. Representing the manufacturing team, Joshua Möller explained the production process behind the Calvian endo-pen®.
For neurosurgeons, meeting the people behind the instruments provides direct insight into the development and manufacturing processes. At the same time, manufacturers receive valuable feedback from clinical practice that can be taken into account in the continuous refinement of instrument designs.
Particularly in endoscopic neurosurgery, details such as instrument geometry, handling characteristics, and access options play an important role in supporting an efficient surgical workflow.

Commitment to Education and Professional Exchange
The visit highlights the importance of dialogue between medical professionals and medical technology companies. Another example of this commitment is the support of the Neurolympics, which took place in Rome from May 20–22, 2026.
The event focused on the analysis of neurosurgical complications, the exchange of professional experience, and the further development of surgical skills. From Sutter’s perspective, it is particularly rewarding that Cesare Zoia, MD, serves as a member of the organizing committee of this international scientific event.

Progress is driven by dialogue. The visit of Cesare Zoia, MD, and Andrea Montalbetti, MD, to Sutter demonstrates how closely clinical expertise and medical technology manufacturing are interconnected. The direct exchange between users and manufacturers fosters a shared understanding of the requirements of modern endoscopic neurosurgery and provides an important foundation for the continued development of specialized instruments.

From Operating Room Feedback to Instrument Development
Designed for endonasal and transnasal endoscopic bipolar coagulation, the Calvian endo-pen® combines a slim design for working alongside the endoscope with a range of tip options and a reusable construction. Learn more about the instrument’s features and clinical applications.
The Calvian endo-pen® is an instrument designed for endonasal and transnasal endoscopic bipolar coagulation in neurosurgical applications.
The Calvian endo-pen® is used in endonasal and transnasal endoscopic neurosurgical procedures, particularly for bipolar coagulation during minimally invasive approaches to the skull base. It is designed for applications that require precise tissue coagulation and instrument control within narrow surgical corridors.
Visits to medical technology manufacturers foster direct dialogue between clinical users and the teams responsible for developing and manufacturing surgical instruments. Neurosurgeons can share their experiences from daily clinical practice, while manufacturers gain valuable insights into the requirements, handling characteristics, and practical use of their instruments.
Cesare Zoia, MD, is Director of Neurosurgery at Moriggia Pelascini Hospital in Gravedona, Italy. His areas of expertise include skull base surgery, endoscopic neurosurgery, and minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures. Andrea Montalbetti, MD, is a neurosurgeon at the same hospital. Both are committed to advancing modern neurosurgical techniques and promoting professional exchange within the neurosurgical community.

We are proud to be a founding supporter of the Robotics Foundation at the Work-Life Robotics Institute of Offenburg University, Germany. Together with strong partners, we actively contribute to shaping education, research, and knowledge transfer in the fields of cobotics, robotics, and socio-technological systems.

At the end of March, we welcomed ten of our EMEA specialist retail partners to a two-day “Training@Sutter ENT Basic” course at our company headquarters in Emmendingen, Germany. The focus was on practical knowledge, personal exchange, and an in-depth look at our 4 MHz radio frequency technology for ENT surgery.
